The Refillable Beauty Guide
New initiatives and brand innovations are ushering in the age of the refill, and not a moment too soon. We all know that plastic is problematic: sadly, 8 million tonnes of it are dumped in our oceans every year and it will come an as little surprise to most that the beauty industry is a contributor.
Unfortunately, recycling isn't always as straightforward as we think: dropping an empty bottle in the recycling bin might feel like a simple solution, but it isn't actually as easy as that. In fact, only 7% of plastic waste currently makes it all the way through to become repurposed and the reality is that recycling is fraught with roadblocks.
What if we could prevent our empty essentials from being thrown out? It might not be the ultimate solution, but switching to refillable beauty products is certainly a stepping stone towards better sustainability.
The Fragrance Revolution
The fragrance is another area where refills can shine: fancy glass and keepsake bottles are made to be kept forever.
Hermes, Givenchy, and Giorgio Armani all already produce refills that decrease the waste involved, while Mugler is appealing to the eco-conscious Gen Z with supersized top-ups of its best selling scent, which can be decanted into your original bottle at home.
